On Sept 5, We Finally HEAD EAST!

September 6, 2009

But first things first, we left Aloha (near Portland) yesterday where our friends the Vandaveers had housed us for a couple of nights. Here we are, ready to back out of the garage and get going again.
After brunch with our friends the Malones in Portland, we headed north towards Mt. Vernon, WA. Here’s my brother-in-law showing us his new lot overlooking the Skagit Valley at twilight time. It’s safe to say, Dale is out standing in his field!
But finally today, we left Mt. Vernon after a leisurely morning (wet), headed south on I-5 to Everett, where we TURNED EAST! A momentous occasion, starting the major West-East leg of our trans-USA trek. Heady stuff it was. But dauntless…
Here we are heading through the Cascades over Rte 2 near Stevens Pass, on our way to Leavenworth for the night…
Weather was a bit inclementy, but Leavenworth, a town which has morphed itself from a dilapidated has-been railroad town to an “upscale” ersatz Bavarian village, is truly a gem to visit. We had some great German food in the King Ludwig, while the band played “Beer Barrel Polka,” et. al. Lotsa fun to be had there.

From Leavenworth, we’ll continue east to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho tomorrow, then into Montana in a couple of days. Stay tuned!

Hi. Not sure where you are now, but if it's anywhere Flathead Lake in Montana, you should give Joan a call. Their car broke down, so they'll be at their home in Montana at least through tomorrow (Tuesday). Sounds like things are going well for you so far. Drive carefully 🙂
